CHIHUAHUA FCI STANDARD

CHIHUAHUA FCI STANDARD

The chihuahua is the smallest dog among the FCI recognized breeds, it is a dog of compact construction. Of great importance is the fact that its skull is in the form of an apple and has its tail, which is moderately long, very high, both curved and rounded in a semicircle with the tip directed towards the lumbar region. Chihuahuas can be short-haired or long-haired. All colors and couplings are allowed and accepted in the FCI standard of the breed with the exception of the Merle color (genetically linked to some serious pathologies). Body length is slightly higher than the height at the withers. However, an almost square body is desired, especially in males. In females, due
of the reproductive function, a slightly longer body is allowed. It is a dog with a vigilant, attentive, lively and very brave temperament.

Commentary to the Standard

As already said, the weight is a characteristic discriminating judgment and assessment of the subject is generally preferred smaller for the same typical characteristics, but it would be better to go to an assessment taking into account in particular the objective problems arising from the reproduction of this breed. Prefer a smaller mare does nothing but increase the already high incidence of cesarean deliveries in parts . Despite numerous farms involved in the selection of the breed , has not yet reached a homogeneous type of chihuahua , but it is also possible to observe large differences between breeding and the other especially considering some geographical barriers that have led to three different macro – lines : English – American – Mexican.
